During the summer of 1999, my family and I visited England, and molded the trip on going to many Roman sites. We stopped at Cirencester (Roman Corinium), Bath (Aquae Sulis), Caerleon (Isca), Chester (Deva), Caernarvon (Saguntum), Hadrian's Wall: Vindolanda, Corbridge (Corstopitum), Chesters (Cilurnum), Housesteads (Vercovicium); Aldborough (Isurium Brigantium), and London (Londinium), and there are a few sites I can't recall the names of.

While visiting the Imperial Forum's area today, one finds oneself in front of spaces and remains of what were once piazzas, streets, and palaces 2000 years ago. Certainly, it is fascinating to know that certain rituals and activities took place in these areas, but it is difficult to imagine effectively the architectural structures. So here, we offer a computer graphic reconstruction of some of the buildings back then, giving you an idea of the monumentality erected thousands of years ago.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912)

Tadema was arguably the most successful painter of the Victorian era. For over sixty years he gave his audience exactly what it wanted; distinctive, elaborate paintings of beautiful people in classical settings. His incredibly detailed reconstructions of ancient Rome, with languid men and women posed against white marble in dazzling sunlight provided his audience with a glimpse of a world of the kind they might one day construct for themselves at least in attitude if not in detail

Welcome to The Heritage Trail

The landscape and culture of Iron Age Britain changed dramatically when the Romans arrived in AD43. Considered to be a peripheral colony of the great Roman Empire, the invaders soon put their unmistakable stamp on the sprawling chaos of primitive settlements. 25 planned towns were created, legionary fortresses were strategically placed around the country, and long straight roads were laid down to provide ease of communication between the military outposts.
