Mercury originated as the Roman god of commerce and was prayed to mainly by merchants. His name comes from the Latin word "mercari" meaning to deal or trade. Later he came to be associated with the Greek God Hermes, adding responsibility for messages to his duties.

Mercury was the God of commerce and thievery. The Son of Jupiter and Maia, daughter of the Titan Atlas, he was introduced into Roman religion around 495 BC. His festival was on the 15TH of May. Mercury was represented as a beardless youth with winged shoes (talaria)fastened to his ankles, and a winged cap (petasos) on his head.
